Management and Leadership Development

First Line Management Programme

CHALLENGE

With three development programmes available for the First Line Manager population across Kier divisions (Construction, Highways and Housing Maintenance), the challenge was to bring all the programmes together to offer one group-wide First Line Management Programme, providing consistent development to an agreed standard, whilst still addressing local needs through contextualisation.

OUR APPROACH

Following a period of intensive consultation with key sponsors and stakeholders in Kier, it was agreed that the new programme would consist of a cohort-based schedule of development activity over an 8-month period with practical and mixed-media content, and:

  • 7 collaborative workshops (including the Insights Discovery Tool and an equality Board Game)
  • 6 post-workshop assignments (with challenges and workplace transfer tasks to expand on topics from the Programme)

4 post-workshop marked assignments, leading to an ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management Qualification.

“I learnt a lot about myself and more so about how and why colleagues work the way they do and how I need to communicate differently to relate to them better”

Outcomes

With 4 Cohorts commencing the programme in 2017, positive feedback has led to a further 6 Cohorts planned in for 2018 and 2019. Evaluation is ongoing with robust analysis and reporting extending beyond the completion of programmes.

Allow Us To Improve Performance Through Leadership...

We have asked people why they choose to work with us and keep coming back, and overwhelmingly they told us that no one else works so effectively to improve performance through people.
